Overview

Built in 1902, Oaklands was originally an Edwardian residence. The house was commissioned by Sir Frederick John William Johnstone, 8th baronet (5 August 1841 – 20 June 1913) who was an English racehorse owner and Conservative Party politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1874 to 1885. He later became High Sherriff of Dorset.

Johnstone was a close friend of the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) whose coronation is commemorated with a plaque on the front of Oaklands and was named as a co-respondent in the divorce case involving Sir Charles Mordaunt and his wife, Harriet (1870) in which the Prince was called to give evidence.

We bought the property in February 2017 and since then it has undergone extensive renovation. We’ve tried to keep as many of the original Edwardian features as possible but also give the place a contemporary and somewhat eclectic feel and we hope you like it as much as we do.

You’ll see the ‘original’ ceiling in the dining room and experience the ‘honesty bar’ in the lounge. In the rooms you’ll find quirky and unusual furniture as well as high quality beds, linen and towels. We’ll do everything we can to make sure you have a great stay with us and look forward to welcoming you to the new Oaklands.
